Critical Photo Essay

The video I created was for the purpose to explain a little bit about typography. Throughout this class I have really come to appreciate design and especially font design. How is possible that one font, like helvetica, could change a generation like it did? How did someone come up with idea to make language look so good? All these questions I have been thinking about through this class and I hope it motivates us all to think about it when we see fonts. Because those fonts were designed for a specific purpose. I urge everyone to find a font that they like personally and discover why it was created. It might express certain things in your own personality that you did not know. I know I really enjoy helvetica because it is simple a sleek. After watching the documentary I was really impressed by the science that goes behind font design. Look into it! I hope you enjoy the film, it was fun making it!

Nice Comments Only Please

There is a reason that when I post videos on youtube and vimeo that I make it impossible for others to leave a comment. People are mean! I feel bad for movie stars, music artists and athletes because the comments left under their videos could make an adult man cry. I blame Simon Powell from American Idol. The second he started trash talking the kids on live tv and making people laugh the world started leaving ridiculous comments! I completely agree with the articles when they say,"It is a practice which must be completely stopped. Every article, even in a newspaper, should be accompanied by the name of its author; and the editor should be made strictly responsible for the accuracy of the signature." People would not be so nasty if they had to post their names on it! 


So many TED videos! I LOVE them! I thoroughly enjoyed Anderson's and Pariser's TEDtalks, they were so insightful. It is so true the "Crowd Accelerated Innovation" idea. He describes it as" a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print!" Wow so true. Dude I love youtube videos. I have been taught to do so many things from just watching them. This is embarrassing but I just got a new waitressing job and I super suck at balancing the tray so I youtubed better ways to hold trays! I could not have lived without all this world-wide-web knowledge like my mother did! You can truly learn anything because of the web. Pariser's talk also blew me away but in a scary way. How crazy is it that Google can monitor everything you search and then modify your searches when you go on next. Ahhh, I feel like I have no privacy now. I want to try it though. I am going to google Egypt and have my friend do it too to see our results. Mine would probably be the ones on vacations, I am kind of shallow that way!

Bahahahaha this is so true. You can eHow how to make a pbj sandwhich or how to tie your shoe. The stuff people are eHowing is ridiculous! These things called Content Farms are killing us and yes they are making Google look like trash. 


Overral, this week on Network Argument and Invention was great. I was blown away by how much the internet really does affect our day to day lives. That people need to take credit for their mean comments, that content farms and google need to stop stalking me and that youtube needs to put out more videos!

Surface Reader

            I always kind of thought I was a skimmer until I read Sosnoski, and that alone made me feel guilty. But now I have discovered I peck! So so wrong. I have robbed so many writers of the structure and coherence they have tried to create! By me jumping around the text I have created something completely new. Which is crazy to think about! I am ashamed to be a surface reader! Just had to confess that. So this weeks articles were amazing. My mind right now feels like mush. After reading the McCloud comic/articles I feel like I have been living 22 years without noticing things.  Somehow I have been creating voices in my head without even noticing. Like the guy who is narrating the comic, I gave him a distinct voice in my head. This is messing with my mind. Because how many other times have done that and how much power does it have to manipulate my thoughts and actions? Also now I am going to play this game where I draw a picture of something and ask people want it is. Like a picture of a leaf. The Icon game. It’s a leaf> no> it’s a picture of a leaf> no> it’s a drawing of a picture of a leaf. This game could go on forever! But it shows you just how effective visual pictures are in communicating.

When it comes to multimodal texts I have learned so much! The artist is trying to convey some form of meaning to the audience. By no means do I believe you must have multiple modes to entertain but I do think it helps. In so many of my classmates videos, when they combined a song to their photographs, there was so much more meaning. For example, in Sarah’s project the photos but the music conveyed to me how much she adored those children. Maybe I could of picked on it by the cute photos she chose but adding the music made me actually feel it. The same goes for Carson’s project. If the music would not have been there I probably would have thought elmo was going to kill that gear haha. But through the texts, video angles and music I knew he was in love! Very clever video by the way. Now Sam’s video made me think about the McCloud comic and the voice in my head. When you the text a whitty Canadian voice is created and you don’t know how it happened. But a job well done in capturing my focus. By the way I am half Canadian so I feel ya! In Molly’s video I could totally understand the poem and how much she appreciated it. She did a great job combining the music, video and texts to make she appreciate too. If I would have just been reading the poem in a book never would I have felt it like I did watching her video. Then last but not least Kara’s video. I must confess at first I was like, “Oh, these must be stars she likes.” But then after reading the obituaries at the end I could see she was complimenting her friends for living well even though it was short. It was a great way to really capture your audience at the end, making them feel what you were feeling!

To be effective in communicating to an audience use multimodal texts, it really does work to convey our emotions so much more. In my own personal video I just wanted to show how much I loved Bozeman. So I composed music, video and a little bit of text. I wanted to see what would happen if I added color filters and unique editing techniques and coregraph the music and video together how the audience would feel. Would they think about their favorite locations in Bozeman or would they remember how great this city was. Overrall I am very impressed with my classmates editing abilities. I got what you were all trying to say! Great job!

Education is Broken!

I could listen to Sir Ken Robinson all day long, and it is not because of his witty British self. I love what he stands for and believes.  When you love something one hour feels like 5 minutes. We need to be allowed to pursue what we love! Also while he was talking he quoted so many other people. It was textuality; so many ideas brought into one!

This is broken. So true people do not want to fix something that is broken because a) it is not their job b) jerk c) they don’t need to use it d) designed for people who will understand it and not everyone else. That is our education system. People are not taking the initiative to recreate education because they are hypnotized from the past.

Seeing the texts and Multiple Media I enjoyed because I want to do my Critical photo essay about text/typography and how it keeps evolving.  I enjoyed how the article said, “Though classroom teaching often assumes essay organization as the norm, outside the classroom visually informative prose is pervasive, and not just in scientific or technical fields (P.67)” 

Overall I picked up on the point of this weeks design theme. The articles and videos talked about our lethargic epidemic in education and choosing not to evolve. But IT IS OUR JOB. A few should not be responsible for everyone’s education. We should all be responsible. We need to do what Sir Ken Robinson, “We need a education revolution! By doing this we need to take savvy multimedia makers and combine them with brilliant educator and make a new way of learning.”

I am just super excited because I love this idea and it makes me feel like I will have good job security if I stick with filmmaking! Also I just love filmmaking in general. I find it so sad when people don’t know what makes them happy. My mother always said “Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life!” I also feel privileged because my parents were amazing at telling me what I was good at. I think our parents and teachers play major parts in speaking into our lives. How do we know we are good at things unless people affirm us from time to time. What do you guys think?

The Power of TYPOGRAPHY

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. We see type everywhere. In magazines, movies, on buildings, clothes, coffee cups, billboards, cars, cell phones…on everything! Many believe because this is the digital age that type will one day become desolate and disappear because of motion media, but the truth is, Typography is going nowhere! In fact, everyone in mass communication is using it and it is a powerful emotional tool!

So for my Critical Photo Essay the question I will be researching is "Typography and it’s influence in our society." I will compile a photo montage of type being used all around us to portray its power, discuss a short documentary called Helvetica and how that one font changed a generation, show how typography is being used in our generation through mass communication and conduct interviews to ask the general public what they think will happen to type.

Overall my hypothesis of this research will prove that typography is not going out of style but the exact opposite. It will show that is a power tool in influencing society and that all though it is changing the way it looks it will remain here forever!
